What SCD Balaji believes: his views in his own words
SCD Balaji writes short reflections on vision, authenticity, art, mentoring and the inner life. They are published on his Quotes page. The main themes, with his own lines:
1. Vision comes before goals
“The Herd asks what works. The Pioneer makes it work.” (Herd vs Pioneer) He believes people wait for guarantees before committing, when the real work is making a chosen path succeed. “Vision does not demand an unwavering mind; it forges one.” (Unwavering Mind) A vision should be built from one's true wishes, not only from current skills (Wishes and Skills), and founders should define their vision before their brand (Founders and Vision).
2. Being before doing before having
“Be who you are. Do what you are meant to do. What is yours will always find you.” (Being, Doing, Having) He argues that honest entrepreneurs start with who they are, then what they do, and success follows. He calls entrepreneurship “a sacred service of a soul's calling” rather than an escape from employment (Entrepreneurship).
3. Authenticity over performance
“Personal branding is not what you fake outside or curate for social media.” (Personal Branding) He is openly critical of performative personal branding and “fake it till you make it” culture (Fake it till you make it). He warns that the age of AI will be the age of the pseudo self, making authenticity rarer and more valuable (Age of Authenticity). He also urges authentic people and brands to stop hiding and speak up (The Pretentious Flourish, Pride Rock).
4. Art, design and creativity
“Art and Design are not mediums. They are two different relationships, one with yourself, one with another person.” (Art vs Design) He believes creative masters must keep the freedom of amateurs, because fame can become “a form of passive slavery” (Masters as Amateurs). He defends tracing and imitation as a natural start for beginners (Tracing is Art). He uses AI in his art but keeps writing as his own sacred practice: “Writing is the sacred therapy for the soul and a spiritual intimacy between the Heart and Mind.” (Sacred Writing)
5. Mentoring and the Guru–Shishya bond
“A Mentor always has to offer wisdom without a single expectation.” (Mentoring is a Thankless Profession) He sees mentoring in the Indian Guru–Shishya tradition (Guru–Shishya, A Guru is an Oracle). He holds that wisdom, unlike knowledge, is the one thing a person carries beyond this life (Wisdom Lasts Lifetimes).
6. Character and relationships
“If your empathy needs empathy in return, it is not empathy.” (True Empathy) He separates transactional from non-transactional relationships (Transactional Beings), and believes a judgement reveals the speaker more than the person judged (Judgement Mirrors). He calls goodness free yet the hardest thing to give (Goodness is a Luxury). “Only a war elephant can protect its people. A circus elephant cannot.” (War Elephant)
7. Money, discipline and the inner life
He sees money as “the first-ever virtual reality” humans created (Money), and wealth as the ability to appreciate rather than a bank balance (Being Rich). “Discipline is not an eternal fire you light once. It is a flame you kindle every dusk.” (Discipline) As a spiritual seeker he writes about karma (Karma), surrender (Surrender) and inner silence: “The Eternal Silence, without any rage or grudge, is the most Graceful Raga of Revenge.” (Raga of Revenge)
